Heavies of Long Island Smash Ultimate
by Dom (sKorZ)
We all know the zoners, the swordies, the spacies, etc. Some of these types of fighters are meta such as Aegis and Sonic. However there is one type of fighter that’s not just categorized in Smash, but other fighting games like Street Fighter and Marvels 2 & 3. Now it’s all about the big boys, the BigXDaPlug type characters, the heavies. Heavies are normally slower in movement. Most of the time they’re wonky, slow, and tend to be low tiers. Many heavies, though, have their own pros. When a heavy normally attacks you in a Smash game, they tend to inflict more damage than a regularly sized character.. That’s what makes characters like Bowser, Donkey Kong, and even King K Rool more pleasing to the eye for some players rather than a top tier. Many players in Long Island’s Smash Community use heavies and have done great things with their respective characters. When it comes to this, three names come to mind as examples. Glial, DKWill, and J-Dawg. All of these players have used heavies to make waves in Long Island Smash to push themselves to make the same moves in majors as well. These are some of the premier heavy players in Long Island!
We first start with Glial. Glial is a Bowser/Snake co-main who competes with the Stony Brook esports team. He is joined by other great talent in Stony Brook such as Cody, Amayne, Quidd, and BopIt! Lately, he has been surging to be one of the best players in the school with how consistent he’s been in the last 6 months. He has outplaced his seed in most of his brackets except for one Wolfie Wars, Roundtable 5, and Supernova 2025. Other than that, he placed top 8 in all weeklies in Stony Brook and got 3rd place at 2 BopIt Brawls. That’s not the only thing he’s known for. His wins this year are filled with tri-state hidden gems and talent across the board. This year alone he’s beaten Moat, Pizza Ant, and even Top LI players like KeMonito(Cajun Lady) and Amayne. The win on Amayne comes from Wolfies Wars 47 where in that exact bracket, he got first. As the 5th seed, he won by beating Danni Zura, BopIt!, and Toro (A Little Mac player who now competes in Texas). All around, Gliail was always a Top Bowser not only in the Island but I can also say New York as a whole too, being up there with other NY Bowsers like Big Crumb. One of his notable streamed sets was against Sephiroth player Platinum V at Supernova 2025. This set was in Pools and it went to Game 3 last stock, with Platinum getting a back throw into back air to kill the koopa at around 80%. Glial’s best stock in that set in my opinion was when he won game 2 with a roll read side b which landed on the right platform of Hollow Bastion. Bowser was always considered by many the best heavy in the game. However, it has always been an argument with him and this next character!!
DK, DONKEY KONG! HE'S THE LEADER OF THE BUNCH, YOU KNOW HIM WELL!!! Donkey Kong now is to many the best heavy in smash, and honestly I can agree. One pioneer of the new DK Meta is actually one of Long Island's own. DKWill is that pioneer. DKWill is now more a streamer rather than a competitor alone, but he’s certainly more than just a streamer. DkWill has had a pretty decent career in Smash. This is a dude with wins on people like Muteace, Lemmon and Deer(Gock in Ma Rari), and even 2ThiccNicc (now Torna).. This dude has influenced Japanese players and can teach you about a new tech that drops. All that aside though, he’s truly shown that DK is viable. Outside of going to majors like Collision, Kagaribi and Supernova, his runs in Long Island brackets are strong to say the least. For his seed and the limitations of DK, the results speak for themselves. His most recent run was at Shield Breaker’s first Arcadian. In this run, he got 7th by defeating AjRed, SirDunk, and Mango Fan who are all insanely good players in their own right. He had a bad draw with his losses being to [REDACTED] the 2nd best Min Min in the Island, and Hikari who’s a current Top 20 Sora in the world. Overall, DkWill is a legend with Donkey Kong and is a worldwide phenomenon for anyone willing to pick up the monkey!
Now Donkey Kong and Bowser are classified as the top 2 heavies in the game. But as I said before, some can be low tiers. Which is where King K Rool comes into the mix. More of a bottom 10 character, K Rool doesn’t get noticed much, especially in Long Island. However one name stands out, J-Dawg. As much as he’s not as well named as the other two, that doesn’t mean that he has something to prove. J-Dawg is the best K Rool in Long Island beating other K Rools like sKorZ, Metl, and Solo in that ranking. He’s also got some decent wins on insane players in the region. In all of this year alone, the Kroc has notable wins on Aerospace, Pineapples and Aminayski. Those are pretty decent wins especially because of how much of an impact all three of those players made to Long Island smash respectively. All of this year was very consistent for J-Dawg, only underplacing 1 bracket he’s been to and overplacing his other brackets apart from 2. A notable run was Wolfie Wars Monthly 11 where he got 7th by defeating Neso, Jetfire, and the aforementioned Aerospace. The set against Aerospace came to be an Upset Factor 3 win and it gave K Rool one of its only top 8s in a LI smash local.
Heavies are not to be slept on whatsoever and those three names are just the tip of the iceberg as to why. When that one person in that Street Fighter clip said “Pick a Top Tier”, they took that message and threw it out. Heavies, just because they’re deemed to always be trash in the game will always have 1 or 2 better mechanics than certain characters. Even in this new meta where people say “Luigi’s top tier,” there will still have heavies in their paths delivering Whirling Fortresses and Blunderbusses galore. In conclusion, when you see a heavy in your bracket path, don’t assume it’s a cakewalk until you see the masters at work. Will heavies not be slept on anymore? The world will soon find out!!!
